Aidan Murphy is a singer songwriter from Dublin, Ireland. He is also a musical arranger, doing freelance work for studio recordings and shows.
Aidan writes the string arrangements for the Bamboo Sessions. This is a show that involves five singer songwriters playing their own songs backed by a string quartet. The show is on about once every 6 months and involves different song writers each time.
In 1999, Aidan founded the Global Funk Orchestra (GFO) and was musical director until their final gig in 2003. This was a live 20 piece band that played funk, soul and disco covers. The band played several times on RTE including playing after midnight on the New Years show for 2000/2001.
The GFO set consisted of songs by various 70s funk and disco bands including Stevie Wonder The Jacksons, Al Green, and Aaron Neville. These songs were performed with full orchestral arrangements transcribed from the original recordings by Aidan. They released one album in 2002 called "One on the and of Four". This was funded and released by Rubyworks.
The GFO played 25 nights in the Olympia theatre in Dublin to packed houses. They also clocked up another 25 gigs in various venues including HQ (now Spirit), Redbox, Temple Bar Music Centre, Budweiser Irish Derby and colleges UCD and DCAD.
The Afrika Dance Party was a 15 piece Fela Kuti covers band that played two gigs in 2003. Aidan was the arranger and musical director. Through this, Aidan has extensive experience of arranging for African percussion and brass.
Between 1997 and 2001, Aidan hosted a weekly show on Dublin's Jazz 89.8 FM. His weekly slot featured rare disco, funk, soul and jazz tracks. Aidan now plays as DJ Marlowe in Dublin night clubs.
Other bands Aidan has been a member of include Tabularasa (funk / acid jazz originals), East Avenue Mission (funk / reggae covers and originals) and a Queen tribute band. Aidan has been a session musician with bands Prison Love (bluegrass) and Gordiano (latin jazz). He has also been musical director and arranger for school shows.
